Quinta do Noval Vintage Port 2021

Quinta do Noval's Vintage Port is a single-quinta wine drawn from the estate's vineyards above the Cavadinha tributary of the Douro.

A Vintage Port is declared only in years the house considers worthy, bottled young after around two years in wood and left to mature for decades in glass. Noval declares as a single quinta, from its own vineyards rather than a blend of bought parcels, and puts the fruit through a strict selection: this release represents only 4% of the estate's entire production. The blending proportions shift each year according to which varieties performed best; here it is Touriga Nacional, Tinto Cao, Sousao, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca, all foot-trodden in temperature-controlled granite lagares in the traditional way. The wine matured for 18 months in old wooden barrels and was bottled with 97 grams per litre of residual sugar. The Noval style is elegance over opulence, and this carries its power lightly, with floral-led aromas and a long, gently spiced finish.

Cellar it for a decade or more, though it is approachable young by the standards of the category; decant off the sediment. Serve at 16-18°C with blue cheese, walnuts or dark chocolate.
