Description

Radford Dale Black Rock is a Syrah-led, Rhône-style blend from South Africa's Swartland.

The Swartland, north of Cape Town, is known for old bush vines on granite and shale soils, and it has become one of the Cape's most exciting regions. This blend draws on those vineyards, combining Syrah with Cinsault, Carignan, Grenache and Mourvèdre. The team at this Stellenbosch-based winery picks earlier than many, which keeps the alcohol moderate at 12.5% and the fruit bright and fresh. The wine shows dark fruit, spice and a hint of fynbos, the native Cape scrub, with generous concentration and a smooth, refined texture.

Serve at around 16 degrees. It suits lamb tagine, grilled boerewors or other spiced sausages, and roast vegetables with harissa. With a few years in bottle already, it is drinking well now.
