Radio-Coteau Sonoma Coast Dusty Lane Syrah 2016

Radio-Coteau Sonoma Coast Dusty Lane Syrah is a full-bodied single-block Syrah from the certified organic Dierke Vineyard.

Dusty Lane is a block inside Dierke Vineyard, which John Dierke planted in 2006 on Goldridge soils across a hillside west of Sebastopol. Southeast-facing, well drained and open to the coastal air from the west, it carries a suitcase selection of clones from the northern Rhône and California and has a reputation for powerful, expressive fruit. Eric Sussman has worked with it since 2008 under a long-term contract, and the acre and a half he draws on is farmed to his specification. The 2016 was handpicked and fermented as a mix of whole bunches, whole berries and crushed fruit, with twenty per cent bunches for lift and spice. Gentle pump-overs, free-run only, eighteen months in 500-litre puncheons, a third new.

Black pepper, olive, blueberry and smoked meat, with the grain and drive that cool-site Syrah gives and tannin built for the long haul. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Lamb shoulder, peppered steak, or a slow-braised beef cheek will meet it properly.
