Description
Ragnaud Sabourin Grand Champagne No. 4 is the first step in the numbered range of a family estate in Grande Champagne, the leading cru of Cognac.
Despite the name, Grande Champagne has nothing to do with the sparkling wine region; it is the chalk rich heart of the Cognac appellation, south of the town, whose soils are prized for the longevity they give to eaux-de-vie. Ragnaud-Sabourin, based at Ambleville, farms its own vines and carries the spirit from harvest through double distillation in copper alembic stills to ageing in Limousin oak and bottling on the property. The house works largely with Ugni Blanc, a variety picked early at low sugar, which is precisely what suits it to distillation, alongside older plantings of Folle Blanche. Its numbered range runs from this bottling up through decades old reserves, and the estate has long declined to use the caramel and sugar adjustments common in the trade.
Suited to drinking neat at room temperature after a meal, and robust enough to stand as the base of a classic Cognac cocktail.
