Description
Ravensworth Charlie-Foxtrot Gamay Noir is a light-bodied Gamay from high-altitude vines above the Canberra district.
Johansen Vineyards sits at 710 metres, and the Gamay there is planted on rich soils of basalt, iron-magnesium and feldspar. These are among the oldest Gamay Noir vines in Australia, and Bryan Martin describes the material as an old and very dark clone tracing back to the country's earliest plantings. Both carbonic and whole-berry maceration go on here, holding the fruit around four weeks on skins. The change in 2024 was the raising: fifteen months in Italian-made Nico Velo cement pyramids before bottling, which keeps the fruit clear and adds a fine-grained texture that oak would have blurred.
Crunchy red currant, raspberry and violet with a peppery, mineral finish and very fine tannin. Serve it cool, 13 to 14 degrees, or with a short spell in the fridge on a hot day. Charcuterie, roast chicken, or grilled sardines all work.
