Ravensworth Estate Shiraz Viognier 2023

Ravensworth Estate Shiraz Viognier is a co-fermented blend of Shiraz and a little Viognier from Murrumbateman.

Ninety-five per cent Shiraz to five per cent Viognier, co-fermented with twenty per cent whole bunches in open-top fermenters and plunged daily across a maceration of three to six weeks. A year in barrique, a fifth of it new, was followed by a second year in large-format foudre. Bryan Martin calls it a wine of red fruit, spice and flowers, and while the lift used to be credited to the Viognier, enough vintages have now passed to make clear that this is simply how Syrah behaves off his high, granite block at 650 metres. Bottled without fining or filtration. The northern Rhône is the model, the accent is Canberra District.

Red plum, pepper, violets and a savoury, meaty undertow, with fine tannin and real lift through the finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast lamb, peppered beef, or slow-cooked pork with fennel will all hold up to it.
