Description
Ravensworth Grüner Veltliner is a textural Grüner Veltliner from high-altitude vineyards at Tumbarumba.
There had been no Grüner from this cellar since 2019, not for want of interest: Bryan Martin rates the variety highly and is convinced the alpine conditions at Tumbarumba suit it, but plantings are scarce. In 2023 he secured two small parcels, one from Coppabella and one from an unnamed site nearby. Coppabella has a long record of supplying serious fruit, Penfolds Yattarna among its destinations. The grapes were pressed directly to twenty-hectolitre Stockinger foudres for fermentation, and the wine spent two years there on lees. Martin reckons the variety sits comfortably in that big, thick-staved wood, which gives it texture and lets the aromatic spice through.
White pepper, lentil, lemon and a broad, lees-built texture with a dry mineral finish. Serve at 11 degrees. Martin's own recommendation is a schnitzel, and he is right; it is also good with roast pork, or asparagus with butter.
