Ravensworth Hilltops Montepulciano 2023

Ravensworth Hilltops Montepulciano is a medium-bodied Montepulciano from the Grove Estate vineyard at Young.

A long, cool season in Hilltops in 2023 was rescued by dry, warm autumn weather that carried the fruit to full ripeness. The grapes came from Grove Estate, just east of the town of Young and one of Bryan Martin's regular Montepulciano sources. Destemmed whole berries went into open-top fermenters and sat there four weeks, plunged each day, then were given a first year in one to three-year-old puncheons followed by a second in two-thousand-litre Stockinger foudres. Very few Montepulcianos anywhere get a full year in Stockinger, as Martin has pointed out, and he rates the variety as one of the most dependable performers in Hilltops.

Dark plum, black olive and dried herb, with substantial but well-mannered tannin and a savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Pizza, a lamb and eggplant bake, or grilled sausages with lentils will all find their level with it.
