Description
Ravensworth Shiraz Viognier is a co-fermented Shiraz and Viognier from the estate vineyard at Murrumbateman.
This style is the one Bryan Martin has championed longest, having made Australia's most celebrated version of it over fifteen years at Clonakilla. The 2021 is ninety-five per cent Shiraz with five per cent Viognier, all from the Murrumbateman estate block, twenty-five-year-old vines at 650 metres on soils of decomposed granite and red loamy clay. Fruit was processed as whole berries into cuve and spent four weeks on skins before pressing to old barrique for twelve months, then racked to seasoned Stockinger foudre for a further year, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The purity and texture drawn out of that fruit is the thing worth noting here.
Red plum, cracked pepper, dried flowers and a savoury, iron-flecked finish, powerful but deftly weighted. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Roast lamb with rosemary, a peppered rib of beef, or duck with plums will all do it justice.
