Ravensworth Syrah 2023

Ravensworth Syrah is a full-bodied, single-clone Syrah from the Canberra district.

Clone 470 is the whole basis of this wine, a recent arrival in Australia and, by Bryan Martin's account, a difficult thing to grow. It is loaded with spice, which is why he persists with it. All the fruit was destemmed and given a long maceration on skins, then put into new oak puncheons, every one of them. That figure sounds heavy-handed until you know the cooperage: Martin chooses a maker whose barrels are deliberately neutral, much like Stockinger, so the oak presence is far lighter than the percentage suggests. The approach is carried straight over from his years making Syrah at Clonakilla.

Rich, earthy and classically Canberra in accent, with black pepper, dark plum, cured meat and a savoury, gravelly finish. Serve at 16 degrees. Peppered steak, lamb shoulder, or a mushroom and beef pie would all be right at home.
