Description
Ravensworth The Grainery is a Viognier-led white blend with Marsanne and Roussanne from the Canberra district.
The blend here changes with the season, and 2023 tipped towards Viognier at forty-eight per cent, with Marsanne at thirty-two and Roussanne at twenty. The Roussanne is the freshening agent, offsetting the texture and grip that the other two bring in abundance. Fruit was hand-harvested and destemmed before pressing to demi-muids to ferment, and just as that was finishing Bryan Martin moved the blend, lees included, into a twenty-hectolitre Stockinger oval where it sat until bottling. He added extra solids, which built a gentle reductive character, a useful counterweight for grapes that can otherwise turn oily.
Apricot, honeysuckle, almond and a struck-match reductive edge, weighty through the palate but kept upright by a dry, savoury close. Serve at 12 degrees. Match it with roast pork, a chicken and mushroom pie, or grilled prawns with garlic butter.
