Ravensworth Zin-Zin Baby Primitivo 2024

Ravensworth Zin-Zin Baby Primitivo is a full-bodied Primitivo from thirty-year-old vines at Young in Hilltops.

Primitivo and Zinfandel are the same grape, and the fruit here comes off Grove Estate at Young, where vines of thirty years stand on alluvial parna above rust-red chromosols. Bryan Martin fermented whole berries, plunging by hand each day and leaving the wine to macerate on skins for three weeks before pressing to old barriques, where it rested fifteen months. Bottling followed with no fining or filtration. Frost threatened during the 2024 season and the crops came in small and early, but conditions ended up suiting this wandering variety well, and it is only made when the year allows, which is not often.

A rare version of this grape that is not big and brawny: bright bramble fruit, black pepper and dried herb over medium weight and fresh acidity. Serve at 16 degrees. Barbecued pork ribs, a spiced lamb pizza, or grilled eggplant with harissa all work.
