Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese 2007

Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese is a sweet Rheingau Riesling from the estate's home vineyard, made in tiny quantities.

Kiedrich lies in the hills behind Eltville in the Rheingau, and the Gräfenberg is its steepest and most celebrated site, a rocky south-facing slope that has been the core of the Weil estate since 1875. Weil are considered masters of the sweeter Prädikat styles, and the mountainous, stony setting of these vineyards is what allows the balance the house looks for between natural sweetness, akin to a beautifully ripe piece of fruit, mouth-watering freshness and pungent minerality. The Gräfenberg Auslese is picked in successive passes through the vineyard from botrytis-affected berries, and reaches must weights that technically place it at Beerenauslese level. Yields are very low and the volume produced is almost homeopathic, which is the source of its extraordinary concentration. Fermentation is slow and halts of its own accord, leaving high residual sugar carried by the acidity the site reliably provides.

It is drinking beautifully and will keep for decades. Serve at 8-10°C with fruit tarts, a mature blue cheese, or on its own at the end of a meal.
