Description
Robert Weil's Gräfenberg Auslese is a half-bottle of sweet Riesling from selected late-picked bunches on the estate's grand cru slope.
The Rheingau's Kiedricher Berg rises steeply behind the village of Kiedrich, and Weingut Robert Weil has held the best of it since the 1860s. The estate's reputation rests as much on its botrytis wines as on its dry Rieslings. Harvest seldom starts before October and can run eight to ten weeks, with a team of up to forty pickers going through the rows in as many as seventeen passes, taking only berries that have shrivelled cleanly. The site is rocky and airy enough that the sugar never arrives without the acidity to carry it. Gräfenberg is the summit of the Weil holdings, a steep south-facing amphitheatre of deep phyllite slate. At Auslese level the pickers take whole bunches of fully ripe fruit carrying some botrytis, and the wine settles at around 123 grams per litre of residual sugar against 9.8 grams of acidity at 8 per cent alcohol.
Drinking well now and capable of twenty years or more in bottle. Serve at 8-10°C with a fruit tart, spiced Asian dishes or washed-rind cheese.
