Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese is a rare botrytis-affected sweet Riesling in a 375ml bottle.

Few estates anywhere are held in higher regard for Germany's top Prädikat wines, and the Riesling authority Stuart Piggott has credited Wilhelm Weil with keeping the Rheingau's tradition of high-end dessert Riesling alive in the modern era. Beerenauslese sits near the top of that ladder: individual berries, shrivelled and affected by noble rot, picked out by hand from the Gräfenberg vineyard over repeated passes, in quantities so small the wine is made in purpose-built miniature vats. Yields at this level are almost notional. Gräfenberg has been the estate's premier site since 1867, and the loess and loam beneath it give the sweet wines their weight.

Concentrated but never heavy, with apricot, honey, candied citrus and a deep mineral thread, the acidity crystalline enough to carry all that sugar. Serve at 9 degrees in a small glass. Blue cheese, a peach tart or foie gras are the classic partners, though it needs nothing at all.
