Robert Weil Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2022

Robert Weil's Gräfenberg Spätlese is a lightly sweet Riesling from the estate's grand cru slope, bottled at 9 per cent alcohol.

Kiedrich lies in the eastern Rheingau, and Gräfenberg is the steepest and highest of the three hillside sites Weingut Robert Weil has held since the 1860s, a south-facing amphitheatre on deep phyllite slate. Spätlese here means fruit picked well after the main harvest, with a little botrytis, and the wine is left with around 69 grams per litre of residual sugar against 9.3 grams of acidity, so the sweetness reads as weight and length rather than as sugar. The picking team, which can run to seventy people, goes through the rows repeatedly to take only what is ready. Low alcohol is part of the design: at 9 per cent the wine stays light on the palate and is easy to return to. It is the classic Rheingau Prädikat style, and the one the estate makes in the greatest quantity.

Excellent young and capable of twenty years or more. Serve at 8-10°C with roast pork and apple, Sichuan or Thai dishes, or a fruit-based dessert.
