Description
Kiedrich Klosterberg is Robert Weil's dry Riesling from the highest of the estate's three hillside sites, on iron-rich weathered slate.
Klosterberg covers four steep hectares above the village of Kiedrich in the eastern Rheingau, reaching up to 300 metres, which makes it the highest of the three classified sites Weil farms. Its southern aspect and its deeper, iron-bearing weathered slate soils offset that altitude, so the wines are the most generous of the estate's dry range in their youth; the team habitually describe them as baroque, meaning lift and breadth rather than heaviness. The vines are between forty and sixty years old. As with all the estate's single-site dry Rieslings, this is raised entirely in doppelstückfass, the large traditional wooden cask, and left on full lees for ten months before bottling, which builds texture without adding oak flavour. It shares much with the village Kiedricher bottling but pushes harder in intensity and drive through the finish.
Approachable on release and rewarding over ten to fifteen years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork, grilled snapper or a mushroom and leek tart.
