Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Beerenauslese 375ml 2022

Robert Weil's Turmberg Beerenauslese is a half-bottle of sweet Riesling made from botrytised berries selected on the estate's monopole slope.

The Rheingau's Kiedricher Berg rises steeply behind the village of Kiedrich, and Weingut Robert Weil has held the best of it since the 1860s. The estate's reputation rests as much on its botrytis wines as on its dry Rieslings. Harvest seldom starts before October and can run eight to ten weeks, with a team of up to forty pickers going through the rows in as many as seventeen passes, taking only berries that have shrivelled cleanly. The site is rocky and airy enough that the sugar never arrives without the acidity to carry it. Turmberg is a 3.8-hectare monopole between Gräfenberg and the village, restored to the vineyard register as a separate classified site in 2005. Beerenauslese sits a step below Trockenbeerenauslese: the pickers take botrytis-affected berries that are richly concentrated but not yet raisined, so the wine keeps a little more transparency and drive alongside its sweetness.

Lovely young and capable of improving in bottle for decades. Serve at 8-10°C with a fruit tart, foie gras or mature blue cheese.
