Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Auslese 375ml 2022

Robert Weil's Turmberg Auslese is a half-bottle of sweet Riesling from selected late-picked bunches on the estate's monopole site.

The Rheingau's Kiedricher Berg rises steeply behind the village of Kiedrich, and Weingut Robert Weil has held the best of it since the 1860s. The estate's reputation rests as much on its botrytis wines as on its dry Rieslings. Harvest seldom starts before October and can run eight to ten weeks, with a team of up to forty pickers going through the rows in as many as seventeen passes, taking only berries that have shrivelled cleanly. The site is rocky and airy enough that the sugar never arrives without the acidity to carry it. Turmberg is the estate's 3.8-hectare monopole, reinstated as a classified site in 2005 after the 1971 wine law had absorbed it into Gräfenberg. At Auslese level the pickers take whole bunches of fully ripe fruit with a proportion of botrytis, giving a wine of around 116 grams per litre of residual sugar against 10.3 grams of acidity at 8.5 per cent alcohol.

Approachable now and good for twenty years or more. Serve at 8-10°C with a fruit tart, Thai-spiced prawns or a plate of washed-rind cheese.
