Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

This magnum holds Robert Weil's dry Riesling from Kiedrich Turmberg, a 3.8-hectare monopole on the slope below a ruined castle tower.

Kiedrich sits in the eastern Rheingau, on steep ground behind the village where phyllite slate and quartzite give Riesling a firm, stony frame. Turmberg takes its name from the last standing tower of Burg Scharfenstein, the twelfth-century castle above the vineyard. The 1971 German wine law folded the site into neighbouring Gräfenberg, erasing a distinction that had held for centuries; Wilhelm Weil had it reinstated in the vineyard register as a separate classified site in 2005, and the estate holds it as a monopole. The vines are between thirty and fifty years old. Although Turmberg qualifies for Grosse Lage status, Weil chooses to bottle it as Erste Lage, reasoning, as he puts it, that a pyramid has only one tip, and that tip is Gräfenberg. The wine is dry, raised in large wooden cask and given time on full lees.

Drinking now and capable of ten to fifteen years in this format. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, pork belly or a plate of smoked trout.
