Robert Weil Kiedrich Turmberg Riesling Trocken 2023

Turmberg is a 3.8-hectare monopole above Kiedrich, reinstated as an individual classified site in 2005 after the 1971 German wine law had folded it into neighbouring Gräfenberg.

The name means tower hill, after the last surviving tower of the twelfth-century Burg Scharfenstein that stands above the vineyard. Robert Weil argued the case for the site's separate registration on the grounds of its distinct terroir, and the vines here are in the thirty to fifty year range, as at Klosterberg. The soils are pure rocky slate, and they give the most linear and tightly coiled of the estate's dry Rieslings, with less flesh and more tension than the Rheingau's warmer, loamier sites. The wine is dry in the German sense and made in the reductive, precise Weil style. In Germany's 2024 classification re-evaluation tastings, Turmberg reportedly showed alongside many well-known Grosse Gewächse.

Tight on release and best given three to five years, though it will run for a decade or more. Serve at 10–12°C with pan-fried snapper, roast pork or a mild curry.
