Robert Weil Monte Vacano Riesling Trocken 2021

Monte Vacano is a dry Riesling from a half-hectare parcel inside Gräfenberg that the Weil family bottled separately for celebrations and never sold.

The parcel was once known as Gräfenberg-Lay and lies on one of the steepest sections of the hill, at the transition to Turmberg, where the concentration of phyllite slate is highest. Dr Robert Weil bought it in the nineteenth century with the dowry from his marriage to Emilie von Vacano, and named the wine Monte Vacano, the hill of Vacano. It was bottled alone and kept for family occasions rather than sold; after Weil's death in 1921 the custom lapsed and the fruit went back into the Gräfenberg bottling. The vines are now forty to sixty years old. Reviving the tradition, this is only the fourth Monte Vacano in a century. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed into two refurbished 1,200-litre Stückfässer, fermented spontaneously and left almost two years on lees before bottling. Against the Gräfenberg Grosses Gewächs it trades weight for detail.

Best given a few years and worth keeping for fifteen or more. Serve at 10-12°C with turbot, roast veal or a well-made mushroom risotto.
