Description
Robert Weil Rheingau Riesling Trocken is the estate's entry-level dry wine, blended from high-altitude sites around Kiedrich.
The Rheingau runs along a south-facing stretch of the Rhine west of Wiesbaden and has been Riesling country for centuries; Robert Weil, based at Kiedrich, is one of its best-known estates. This bottling draws on the higher-lying vineyards dotted around the village, among them the brilliantly named Sandgrub and a good measure from Wasseros, a steep, south-west-facing site that abuts the Gräfenberg vines, plus a smaller contribution from higher parcels at Hallgarten. The soils across these sites are typically stony, fragmented phyllite interlaced with loess and loam. At this level the wine is vinified in stainless steel, with roughly 5 per cent fermented in large oak to add a little breadth, and is finished dry.
Ready on release and good for four or five years; serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a Thai salad.
