Description
Roc Breïa Chardonnay, here in magnum, comes from old vines at Bray in the northern Mâconnais and is bottled as Vin de France by choice rather than necessity.
The village of Bray lies in the north of the Mâconnais, in the cooler, later-ripening zone that also includes Cruzille and Verzé. The Roc Breïa vines face west on a windy site, so disease pressure is low, and the Chardonnay is drawn from plantings dating to the mid-1940s and the mid-1970s. In the cellar the approach is simple: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation in used 500-litre barrels, bottling without filtration and a single small addition of sulphur at bottling amounting to 20 mg/L. Théo Dancer has chosen to label the wine Vin de France instead of taking the Mâcon-Bray appellation, which frees him from restrictions on picking dates. The wine is juicy and punchy, notably fresher and racier than the region's reputation would suggest.
Drinking well on release and holding four or five years in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a leek tart.
