Roc Breïa Chardonnay 3L DOUBLE MAGNUM 2022

Roc Breïa Chardonnay, here in double magnum, comes from old vines at Bray in the northern Mâconnais and is labelled Vin de France by choice rather than necessity.

Bray sits in the north of the Mâconnais, in the cooler, later-ripening zone that also takes in Cruzille and Verzé. The Roc Breïa vines face west and the site is windy, which keeps disease pressure low, and the Chardonnay comes from plantings of the mid-1940s and mid-1970s. Winemaking is deliberately plain: the fruit is whole-bunch pressed, fermented in used 500-litre barrels and bottled unfiltered, with the only sulphur added at bottling, a very low 20 mg/L. Rather than claim the Mâcon-Bray appellation, Théo Dancer labels the wine Vin de France, which leaves him free to pick when he judges best. The result runs fresher and racier than the Mâconnais stereotype allows for.

Drinking well on release and, in this format, worth keeping five years or more. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or a plate of hard cheeses.
