Description

Roc Breïa Pinot Noir is a Mâconnais red made by Côte d’Or vigneron Vincent Dancer from vines planted between 1970 and 1985.

Roc Breïa is Dancer’s project in the village of Bray, in the northern Mâconnais near Cruzille and Verzé, one of the cooler and later-ripening pockets of the region. Pinot Noir is far less common than Chardonnay here, but the clay-limestone soils are the same geology that runs the length of Burgundy, and the site is west-facing and windy enough to keep disease pressure low. The wine is vinified with about 50 per cent whole bunches and matured in used 500-litre barrels, after which Dancer makes a rigorous barrel selection and drops anything he is not happy with from the final blend. The approach mirrors his Côte d’Or reds: no added yeast, very low sulphur and no filtration. It is a reminder of what the Mâconnais can do with the variety when the farming and the selection are serious.

Delicious young and good for five to eight years, and it responds well to a decant. Serve at 16-18°C with game birds, roast pork or a mushroom tart.
