Description
Rocche Costamagna Arneis DOC is a white from La Morra in the Barolo hills, made from a Piedmontese grape that came close to disappearing altogether.
Arneis was very nearly lost in the middle of the twentieth century, kept alive in the Roero on the sandy left bank of the Tanaro, where it was often planted among Nebbiolo as a decoy for birds; the name is local dialect for something along the lines of little rascal. Its revival from the 1970s gave Piedmont a serious white to set beside its reds, and it is now grown across the Langhe as well. Rocche Costamagna is based in La Morra, the largest of the Barolo communes, with vineyards on the Annunziata slope below the village. The Arneis is fermented cool in stainless steel and kept away from oak so the variety is presented without embellishment.
Serve at 10 to 12°C with antipasti, fish, vitello tonnato or lighter poultry dishes, and drink it within a couple of years of release.
