Description
Roches Neuves Saumur Blanc Clos Romans comes from Chenin Blanc planted inside the walls of an eleventh-century priory above Parnay.
The clos sits on the limestone ridge just outside Saumur, where the roots push down through the white Senonian bedrock known locally as Pierres de Champigny, the same rock quarried out to form the troglodyte houses in the cliffs below. Thierry Germain acquired the site in 2007 and has steadily replanted it at a density of twelve thousand vines per hectare; the vineyard is farmed biodynamically and ploughed under the direction of his daughter Jeanne. The wine is raised in large-format neutral oak and bottled unfiltered after nine months on lees, an approach that keeps the fruit transparent and the texture light on its feet while retaining the depth that comes from dense planting and low yields.
Rewarding now and worth keeping five to ten years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast pork belly, scallops or a mature goat's cheese.
