Description
Royal Tokaji Betsek Single Vineyard 1st Growth 6 Puttonyos Aszú is a botrytised sweet wine from a classified vineyard above the Hungarian village of Mád.
Tokaj classified its vineyards in 1700, well before Bordeaux, and Betsek is one of the first growths of Mád, a south facing site on volcanic rhyolite. The Royal Tokaji Wine Company was founded in 1990, shortly after the end of communism, by a group that included the writer Hugh Johnson, with the aim of recovering the region's great vineyards and reviving the traditional aszú method. Making aszú is slow work: pickers pass repeatedly through the vines taking only individual berries shrivelled by noble rot, which are macerated in base wine, pressed, and then aged for years in Hungarian oak casks. Six puttonyos denotes the richest of the traditional sweetness levels.
Serve well chilled in small glasses with blue cheese, foie gras or a fruit tart.
