Royal Tokaji Gold Label Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 500ml 2017

Royal Tokaji Gold Label Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos is a richly sweet, top-level Aszú from the historic Tokaj region of north-east Hungary.

Set up in 1990, just after the fall of communism, by a group that included wine writer Hugh Johnson, the company aimed to restore Tokaji to its old standing. Based in the village of Mád, the company draws on some of the most respected first-growth vineyards in the region, many classified as far back as the 1700s. Aszú wines are made from individually picked, botrytised berries that are soaked in fermenting base wine, then aged in small Hungarian oak casks in deep, cool cellars cut into volcanic rock. Six puttonyos is the richest and most concentrated of the traditional Aszú levels, balanced by the naturally high acidity of Furmint.

Pour lightly chilled in small glasses. It is lovely with blue cheese, foie gras, fruit tarts or crème brûlée, and just as good sipped slowly on its own after dinner. A wine of this style will continue to develop in the cellar for many years.
