Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg 2023

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg is a Chenin Blanc grown on ungrafted bush vines high on the red sandstone slopes above the Olifants River.

Sitting at 640 metres, these slopes belong to the Citrusdal Mountain district, the northernmost corner of the Cape winelands and one of its driest. The vines were planted by the late Basie van Lill between 1940 and 1955, never grafted, never sprayed with herbicide or fed chemical fertiliser, and farmed with a care you can taste. Whole bunches go to the basket press, the juice ferments on its own in old casks, then spends a year on lees before the blend goes back to the same wood and is bottled from foudre. Eben Sadie reckons the combination of volume and cutting acidity here points to a long life in bottle.

Weight and cut at the same time: dried pear, lemon oil, a little honeycomb, and a mineral spine that runs the length of the palate. Serve around 12 degrees. Grilled prawns, a ham hock terrine or aged Comte all work well.
