Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg 2024

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Skurfberg is a dry Chenin Blanc from 90-year-old ungrafted bush vines in the far north of the Western Cape.

Between 1940 and 1955 a grower named Basie van Lill put bush vines into decomposed red sandstone at 640 metres, west of the Olifants River, and that planting is now among the most important Chenin sites in South Africa. Rainfall is scarce, the ground is poor, and the vines have never had herbicide or chemical fertiliser. Eben Sadie has long argued that a place this warm should not be able to give wine this fresh, and the 2024 makes the case in a leaner, more upright way than usual. He expects it to fill out in bottle.

Lemon zest, green pear and crushed stone, still tightly wound, with real length. A year or two will soften the edges. Serve at 12 degrees, and pour it alongside oysters, a simple grilled fish or salted almonds.
