Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat 2021

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat is a pure Grenache from high-altitude granite in the Piekenierskloof.

The name comes from the piekeniers, the foot soldiers who once kept watch over this pass north of the Swartland. Eben Sadie's parcel faces east at roughly 780 metres, which puts it among the highest vineyards in the Cape, and the vines are 55 years old, dry-grown and still on their own roots. Cropped at 22 hectolitres per hectare, the fruit ferments and then matures entirely in concrete, with 60 per cent whole bunches in the vat. At 13 per cent alcohol it sits closer to the perfumed Garnachas of the Sierra de Gredos than to anything heavy.

Light in colour, deep in flavour: red cherry, dried herbs, woodsmoke and a savoury, earthy finish with fine tannin. Serve cool, around 15 degrees. Good with roast duck, lentils and sausage, or mushrooms on toast.
