Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat 2024

Sadie Family Citrusdal Mountain Soldaat is a pale, fragrant Grenache from one of the highest vineyards in South Africa.

Height is the point. The parcel climbs to roughly 780 metres in the Piekenierskloof, faces east, and sits on decomposed granite that holds almost no water, so the 55-year-old ungrafted vines crop tiny amounts without irrigation. That combination gives red fruit with lift instead of weight, plus the smoky, spicy, faintly earthy character Eben Sadie now regards as the signature of Cape Grenache from this pass. He describes the 2024 as an exercise in elegance from start to finish, and the wine is hard to argue with.

Rose petal and red cherry on the nose, then a fine, almost translucent palate with sappy acidity and tannin like dust. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits quail, a mushroom risotto, or a plate of jamon.
