Sadie Family Piekenierskloof Soldaat 2020

Sadie Family Piekenierskloof Soldaat is a concrete-raised Grenache from 55-year-old vines in the Cape's high country.

Two changes shaped the 2020. By mid-December the team pulled leaves from around the bunches to let more sunlight in, having traced a green, herbal streak in earlier vintages to heavily shaded fruit, and they destemmed roughly a third of the crop instead of going almost entirely whole-bunch. The site itself is unchanged: east-facing decomposed granite at about 780 metres, dry-grown, ungrafted, in the pass once patrolled by the piekeniers who gave the wine its name. Fermentation and ageing take place in concrete only, with no oak anywhere in the process.

The result is primary and bright: red cherry, pomegranate, a dusting of white pepper, and a finish that stays savoury. Serve at 15 degrees. Roast pork, a lamb and chickpea stew, or grilled eggplant with yoghurt all suit it.
