Sadie Family Stellenbosch Mev. Kirsten 2023

Sadie Family Stellenbosch Mev. Kirsten is a Chenin Blanc from the oldest Chenin vines in South Africa.

One hectare on granite at 220 metres, at the foot of Bothmaskop in the Jonkershoek Valley, planted mostly between 1905 and 1920 and still owned by the Kirsten family. Eben Sadie has bought the fruit since 2006 and now interplants cuttings taken from the block itself to keep it going, vinifying that younger material separately for the time being. The wine ferments in one old foudre with plenty of solids and goes into bottle unfiltered after a year. It is the most structured of his Chenins, and the 2023 is among the more restrained versions.

Dense and quietly powerful: white peach, lemon curd, wet stone and a saline, gripping finish. Give it a decade, or decant it hard and serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast chicken with lemon, turbot, or a hard washed-rind cheese.
