Sadie Family Swartland Columella 1.5L MAGNUM 2021

Sadie Family Swartland Columella in 1.5-litre magnum is the estate's flagship red, a blend of six of the seven red grapes permitted in the Swartland.

First released in 2000, this is the wine that changed how the world looked at Swartland, though Eben Sadie frames the ambition more modestly: an honest reading of the district as a whole. Syrah makes up about a quarter of the 2021, with Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan, Tinta Barocca and Cinsault filling out the rest, and the growing share of those four has added depth to the tannins. Fruit comes from eleven vineyards across Paardeberg, Kasteelberg, Malmesbury and Piquetberg, on seven soil types. The magnum slows everything down, so expect the format to add years to the drinking window.

Damson, dried fig, iron and scrub, with tannin that is firm but polished and a long, dry close. Open it an hour ahead and serve at 16 to 18 degrees. A leg of lamb, slow-cooked beef short rib or a lentil and eggplant bake will all do it justice.
