Sadie Family Swartland Columella 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Sadie Family Swartland Columella in 1.5-litre magnum is a six-variety Swartland red drawn from old, low-yielding parcels.

Twenty-five people sort the fruit here, and between eight and fifteen per cent of it never makes the cut. What survives goes into one large open fermenter for about three weeks on skins, then to the basket press and into French oak barrels of which fewer than one in twenty is new. A year on lees is followed by a move to seasoned oval foudres. The 2022 is a quarter Syrah, much of it grown on individual stakes in the northern Rhone manner, with Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan, Tinta Barocca and Cinsault completing the blend. Bottling in magnum suits a wine built for the long haul.

Dark-fruited but never heavy, with olive, dried herbs, graphite and fine, chalky tannin behind it. Decant, and serve at 17 degrees. Good with roast lamb shoulder, oxtail, or a hard sheep's milk cheese and quince paste.
