Sadie Family Swartland Columella 1.5L MAGNUM 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Columella in 1.5-litre magnum is a Swartland red blend led by Syrah, with a little Pinotage joining the mix.

Syrah accounts for 38 per cent this time, alongside Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan, Tinta Barocca, Cinsault and a small amount of Pinotage. Grapes come off eleven separate vineyards spread over Paardeberg, Kasteelberg, Malmesbury and Piquetberg, taking in granite, slate, gravel and sandstone, because the aim has always been to gather as much of the district into one bottle as possible. Most fruit was destemmed, fermented in a single large open vat for around three weeks, then basket-pressed to barrel with under ten per cent new oak before a year on lees and further time in foudre.

Blue and black fruit, cured meat, dried flowers and a stony bitterness on the close, all held in firm, fine tannin. It rewards a decant and 17 degrees in the glass. Serve with roast venison, beef ribs, or a mushroom and barley pilaf.
