Sadie Family Swartland Columella 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Columella is a Swartland red blend of Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan, Tinta Barocca, Cinsault and a touch of Pinotage.

The 2023 is the first to carry a little Pinotage, with Syrah at 38 per cent and the remainder split between the other five. Eleven vineyards across the district supply the fruit, most of them old and low-cropping, on seven soil types, and a sorting crew of twenty-five discards up to fifteen per cent of what comes in. Fermentation runs about three weeks in one large open vat, then the wine goes to barrel, less than a tenth of it new, before a year on lees and further maturation in seasoned foudres. Eben Sadie bottles it without chasing power.

Purple fruit, dried herbs, cured meat and wet stone, with fine tannin that closes the wine up on the finish. It needs air now and years in the cellar. Serve at 17 degrees with roast lamb, guinea fowl or aged hard cheese.
