Sadie Family Swartland Palladius 1.5L MAGNUM 2022

Sadie Family Swartland Palladius in 1.5-litre magnum is the estate's flagship white, a field of Swartland varieties assembled into one wine.

Where the red flagship gathers the district's black grapes, this does the same for the whites, harvesting seventeen parcels so that every permitted variety gets a say. Chenin Blanc off old bush vines does the heavy lifting; Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Verdelho, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Colombard, Palomino, Semillon Blanc and rare Semillon Gris fill in around it. Decomposed granite dominates, with four sandstone sites, and the oldest vines went in during 1935. Pressed whole in a vertical press to amphora and concrete egg, then two years in large wood, bottled without fining or filtration.

Weight and breadth carry this one, not acidity: baked quince, dried herbs, salted nuts and a long, faintly bitter finish. Serve at 13 degrees, and treat it like a white Rhone. Roast chicken, bouillabaisse or a plate of grilled vegetables and haloumi.
