Sadie Family Swartland Palladius 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Palladius is a multi-variety white blend from seventeen Swartland sites, with old bush-vine Chenin Blanc at its core.

The variety count has crept up over the years and now runs to fourteen, among them Verdelho, Colombard, Palomino, Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Clairette Blanche, Semillon Blanc and the scarce Semillon Gris, with Grillo and Assyrtiko from a coastal limestone vineyard at St Helena Bay joining the project. Most parcels are granite, four sandstone, and the oldest vines were planted in 1935. Whole bunches go through a vertical press into clay amphorae and 725-litre concrete eggs before twenty-four months in large foudres, then bottling without fining or filtration.

Expansive and dry, layered with baked apple, salted citrus, dried herbs and a stony, mouth-coating finish. Serve at 13 degrees, and do not rush it. Roast pork, crab linguine, or a plate of grilled vegetables with olive oil and lemon.
