Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder 2024

Sadie Family Swartland Pofadder is a light-framed Cinsault from old dry-grown vines in the Swartland hills.

In the 1920s this variety covered more South African ground than any other black grape, and its rehabilitation, led in part by Eben Sadie, has been one of the more interesting Cape stories of the past decade. The parcel at Riebeeksrivier, on the Kasteelberg west of Malmesbury, was planted in 1973 into slate and decomposed shale, and it takes rigorous sorting and careful cellar work to get right. Growers in the south of France have started planting the grape again in earnest, and wines like this explain the enthusiasm. Tannins came in softer than usual in 2024.

Balanced and easy to like young: red cherry, rosehip, a little pepper and tannin that barely registers. Serve lightly chilled, around 14 degrees. Roast chicken, charcuterie, or a simple pasta with tomato and olives will all suit.
