Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen 2020

Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen is a co-fermented white of Chenin Blanc and Palomino from a very old Swartland vineyard.

The vineyard lies near the Atlantic edge of the Swartland, one of the cooler and drier corners of the district, and the two varieties share the block roughly half and half. Instead of keeping them apart, Eben Sadie picks and presses them together so they ferment as one wine in old wooden casks. Palomino is the grape of Jerez, and its presence here gives the finished wine a dry, saline cast that sets it apart from every other white in the range. Low alcohol and mineral drive, not fruit weight, are the point.

Lean, salty and precise, with lemon, green almond and a chalky finish. Serve properly cold, about 10 to 11 degrees. Oysters are the obvious call, but it also works with grilled prawns, whitebait or a simple plate of ham.
