Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen 2021

Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen is a co-fermented Palomino and Chenin Blanc from a vineyard two kilometres from the Atlantic.

Named for the scorpions that live in it, the block runs to 2.4 hectares of unirrigated vines more than eighty years old, split evenly between the two varieties, looking out over Elands Bay. The soils are sandy and chalky, close enough to the albariza of Andalucia that Eben Sadie makes the comparison himself, which explains why Palomino thrives. Rainfall barely reaches 300mm a year, so yields sit around 26 hectolitres per hectare and the fruit arrives concentrated and salty. Picked and pressed together, the grapes co-ferment in old casks. Sadie called the 2021 one of his most linear bottlings.

Razor-sharp and low in alcohol, with lime, sea spray, green apple skin and a finish that cuts clean. Serve cold, 10 to 11 degrees. Oysters, sashimi, grilled calamari, or fish and chips with plenty of lemon.
