Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen 2022

Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen is a saline Swartland white made from Palomino and Chenin Blanc picked and pressed together.

Two kilometres from the ocean above Elands Bay, in one of the coolest and driest pockets of the district, sits a 2.4-hectare block of unirrigated vines over eighty years old, half of each variety. The ground is sandy and chalky, much like the white albariza soils of Andalucia, where Palomino has always belonged. With roughly 300mm of rain a year, the vines crop around 26 hectolitres per hectare, which concentrates everything, salinity included. Co-fermentation happens naturally in old wooden casks. Eben Sadie thinks the 2022 drinks earlier than most of his wines, and suggests buying oysters.

Bone dry and briny, running through lemon, green pear, oyster shell and a long chalky finish. Serve it cold at 10 degrees. Oysters first, then mussels, grilled fish, or a plate of jamon and green olives.
