Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen 2023

Sadie Family Swartland Skerpioen is a field-blended white of Palomino and Chenin Blanc from the Atlantic edge of the Swartland.

Eben Sadie jokes that if Mad Max kept a vineyard it would look like this one: 2.4 hectares of unirrigated bush vines over eighty years old on sand and chalk, two kilometres inland from Elands Bay, in a place that sees barely 300mm of rain. Scorpions gave it its name. The dryness keeps yields near 26 hectolitres per hectare and drives the salinity in the fruit. Both varieties are picked and pressed as one and ferment spontaneously in old wood. Sadie notes softer tannin and acidity in 2023, which makes it approachable young.

Salty and quietly complex, with lemon curd, green apple, oyster shell and a fine phenolic grip. Ten to 11 degrees, in a white wine glass instead of a flute. Oysters, prawns off the barbecue, or a bowl of clams and parsley.
