Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor 2024

Sadie Family Swartland Treinspoor is a varietal Tinta Barocca from old bush vines beside a disused Swartland railway line.

The variety, spelled locally with one r and two cs, came from the Douro and has been holding up the district's red blends for generations; the shift to bottling it alone is recent. Planted in 1974 on decomposed granite and sandstone four kilometres from Malmesbury, this block gets by without irrigation, its low canopy protecting fruit that sunburns easily. Concrete fermentation with half whole bunches and eleven months in large cask keep the aromatics intact. Eben Sadie describes the 2024 as one of the most lifted he has made, and points to the purple hue as something new.

Floral and high-toned, with black cherry, grenadine, pepper and an iodine tang, carried on fine, chalky tannin. Serve at 16 degrees. It pairs happily with lamb kofta, roast pork, or a plate of grilled radicchio and pancetta.
