Description
Salomon Undhof Kögl Riesling is a dry Erste Lage Riesling from the terraced Kögl vineyard in Kremstal.
Kremstal runs along the Danube either side of the town of Krems, where the hard primary rock of the Wachau gives way to loess further east. Kögl belongs firmly to the rock: a steep, dry stone terraced slope of gneiss and weathered schist that the Osterreichische Traditionsweinguter rank as Erste Lage, and which the Salomon family has worked from the Undhof since 1792. Thin soils and low yields concentrate the fruit, while cold air spilling from the Waldviertel at night keeps the acidity firm. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented cool, and the wine rests on fine lees in steel and large neutral casks before being bottled dry under screwcap.
Dry, fine-boned and citrus-driven, it suits freshwater fish, roast chicken, schnitzel and soft cheeses; serve at around 10 degrees.
