Description

Salvard Val de Loire Pinot Noir comes from a 1.5-hectare plot on the clay and limestone plains of Cheverny in the central Loire.

Cheverny lies south of Blois in the Touraine, on gentle clay and limestone ground where Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir both do well. Emmanuel and Thierry Delaille run Domaine du Salvard quietly and without fuss, and are best known in Australia for their well-priced Sauvignon Blanc. Their Pinot Noir comes from a small plot of 1.5 hectares planted to vines between ten and twenty years old. Like the white, it is fermented and aged entirely in tank, with no oak, so the emphasis falls on freshness and clarity of fruit. What lifts it above the run of inexpensive Loire Pinot is that it has real substance behind the juicy redcurrant and pomegranate flavours, with a plump, vibrant palate and a mouth-watering finish.

Drink over the next two or three years. Serve at 14-16°C, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, roast chicken or a mushroom tart.
